Germany | Bavaria | Munich | Munchen | Marienplatz | New Town Hall | New City Hall | Rathaus | Glockenspiel | Carillon
The "new" Rathaus Glockenspiel in Munich is now over 100 years old. The crowd still gathers at 11:00 and 12:00 (and 5:00 between March and October) to see and hear the daily animated historical performances. First up is a reenactment of a 1568 jousting tournament celebrating the wedding of Duke Wilhelm V. Following the joust, onlookers can watch the Schaffler Dance which dates back to the end of a plague in Munich (1517).

The timing was almost perfect, so after our Munich walking tour we headed to Marienplatz to watch the Glockenspiel "performances" - two historical scenes played on the clock tower!
Fun fact: The word "glocken" translates to "bells" and "spiel" means "play".
