Egypt | Nile River | Luxor | Edfu | Aswan | Esna | Esna Lock | Nile River Cruise | Esmeralda Nile Cruises | Memphis Tours
River boats traveling from Luxor to Aswan must pass through the Esna Lock to continue their southbound journey. It's very interesting to go to the upper deck or watch from your cabin as your boat enters the lock and the gate closes. Once your boat is inside the lock, you'll rise up as the lock is filled with water. When the water in the lock and the river ahead are at the same level, the gate will open and off you'll go!

While cruising on the Nile from Luxor to Edfu on the Esmeralda, we had to pass through the Esna Lock. Even though we've crossed through the Panama Canal a couple times and locks on the Rhine River in Europe, it was still fascinating to see the boat rise in the lock so that it could continue its journey south.
