Watching the Llamas and Alpacas in Cusco, Peru

We learned how to distinguish an alpaca from a llama (alpacas have longer hair on their foreheads) during our walking tour in Cusco, Peru. Another fun fact that our guide shared is that, in addition to Guinea pigs, hairless dogs and llamas, alpacas were one of only four animals domesticated by the Incas.

Can you imagine having a llama or alpaca as a pet?

During our 2018 free walking tour, our guide took us to a small courtyard near the main square in Cusco, Peru. The courtyard was home to a market, and also the location where we were first introduced to alpacas. These cute domesticated animals were all dressed up in their traditional bridles. Fortunately, during our remaining days in the Sacred Valley, we had many more encounters with these awesome animals.

What are some of your favorite unusual domesticated animals?
