It can be easy to miss the roadside parking near the trailhead for the Piroa Falls trek. The hike down to the falls is short (only about 20 minutes round-trip). Hiking to the waterfall starts off by descending stairs before crossing the Ahuroa River on a narrow concrete bridge (prepare to balance as you cross). Once on the opposite side of the river, you'll continue following the path beside the river until you spot the falls!

With roads still closed due to the recent flooding in New Zealand, our original planned route to return to Auckland from the Northland was not feasible. Just before our departure, the hosts at our cabin rental suggested a new itinerary and off we went.
We were headed to Waipu and the roadside signs lured us to take a short detour to Piroa Falls. The day was rainy and the road was gravel, but we loved our quick hike downhill (and across a river). The trail was slippery but ended at a beautiful waterfall.
