Portugal | Porto | Funicular dos Guindais | Guindais Funicular | Douro River | Railway | Batalha | Ribiera | Quayside | Tunnel | Climb | Public Transport | Steep
Getting from Porto's Ribiera at the Douro River to Batalha (the top of city) can be done in less than five minutes aboard the Funicular dos Guindais. Originally built in 1891 with improvements through the years since, the funicular is still in operation today. Visitors to the historical city enjoy the views as well as avoiding the rather steep uphill climb (the main reason you'll even see locals riding the funicular, too).

We saw the funicular tracks in the morning and after a recommendation from our tuk-tuk guide, we took a ride. Great way to avoid an uphill hike from the river!
