Egypt | Alexandria | Mediterranean Coast | Citadel of Qaitbay | Qaitbay Fort | Pharos Island | Pharos of Alexandria | Lighthouse | Fortification | Military
One of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, the lighthouse of Alexandria (also referred to as the Pharos of Alexandria), was destroyed during a 14th century earthquake. It is believed that the Citadel of Qaitbay that was built in 1477 on the same island, Pharos Island, was built with remains from the lighthouse. Originally built to defend the former capital city from the Crusaders, the imposing fortification still stands today. After exploring the fort, it's easy to understand why the site was chosen!

Our second day of exploring Alexandria with Ramses Tours was winding down and we'd soon be headed back to Cairo. But, we still had a couple more historic sites to see including the fortification on Pharos Island. Located with amazing views of the Mediterranean Sea, it's easy to see why the site was chosen to defend the city from the Crusaders!
We live in a wonderful world that is full of beauty, charm, and adventure. There is no end to the adventures we can have if only we seek them with our eyes open. - Jawaharial Nehru
