Watching the Rio de Janeiro Carnival Parade

While cruising along the coast of Brazil, we were lucky to be docked in the port of Rio de Janeiro during the final night of the Carnival parade competition. The parades are held in the Sambadrome, a several block long stadium-like street viewing area. We watched from early evening until about 5:00 AM. The sheer size of the schools (i.e. parade groups) were amazing. The floats, bands, costumes and samba dancers were incredible.

When was the last time you pulled an all nighter?

Since carnival season in Brazil falls during the summer, parades are held at night so that the temperature is more comfortable. Since our cruise ship was docked in Rio during one of the final nights of the Carnival competition, we decided that we couldn't miss it. Our original intention was to only stay for a couple of hours, but we couldn't pull ourselves away. We didn't quite make it to the end - we missed the last "school" which ended up being the overall winner!

During our three days in Rio, we also saw some of the famous sites including Christ the Redeemer, Sugarloaf Mountain, Ipanema Beach and Copacabana Beach. As a bonus, we got to attend a street party on the morning after the parade.

When was the last time you stayed up all night (by choice)?
