A Stroll along Budapest's Danube Promenade Reveals "Shoes"

Hungary | Budapest | Danube River | Pest | Shoes on the Danube | Memorial | Art | History | World War II
As you stroll along the promenade on the Pest side of the Danube River, you'll come upon a collection of shoes, seemingly for all ages and genders. The shoes are a memorial that tell a true story from the mid-1940s when members of the Jewish faith were forced to strip and face the river in the very place where the memorial stands today. They were then shot in the back so that they would fall into the river where they would soon die.

First stop while exploring the Pest side of the Danube during our only day on our own in Budapest was at the "Shoes on the Danube" memorial. So hard to believe how fellow humans were treated because of differing beliefs.
