St. Mark the Evangelist founded a church in Alexandria, Egypt in AD 60. In addition to performing miracles, many believe that St. Mark was responsible for converting people to Christianity during the estimated seven years that he lived in Alexandria. It is believed that today's St. Mark's Coptic Cathedral stands on that same site located on the streets of Egypt's former capital city. Today (and historically), the cathedral is the seat of the Pope of Alexandria, the head of the Coptic Orthodox Church.
