Gibraltar | Rock of Gibraltar | Upper Rock Nature Reserve | World War II Tunnels | Underground City | Operation Torch
Built more recently than the Great Siege Tunnels, the World War II tunnels were another example of an "underground city" deep inside the Rock of Gibraltar. It is said that there was enough space for the entire armed forces troop along with their equipment and enough food to feed as many as 16,000 for more than a year inside the tunnels. It is also where General Eisenhower and Prime Minister Churchill planned the Invasion of North Africa (Operation Torch).

One of our final stops in Gibraltar's Upper Rock Nature Reserve was a quick walk through the World War II Tunnels. We played it safe with our hard hats as we explored on our own!
Fun Fact: The tunnels inside the Rock of Gibraltar (including the Great Siege Tunnels and the WWII Tunnels) measure in at approximately 34 miles in total length - all inside The Rock!
