See the Forest and the Trees from Fire Tower Lookout


    

Home to a native forest of Kauri Trees, the famous Waipoua Forest can be found in New Zealand's Northland region. Today's Waipoua Forest Fire Tower Lookout was originally built as living quarters for the "fire lookout". This person was responsible for looking out through the panoramic view in search of forest fires. For a view from a high point within the forest, visitors can now climb up the steps of the old lookout!

Do you rely on online information when planning your travels DIY style?

Google is full of so much information, but we've learned that it is not always up to date. We had read recommendations to visit the Waipoua Forest Fire Tower Lookout for some great views in the forest. We were getting conflicting information about whether or not it was open, so we decided to go there (with our fingers crossed). Happy that we did, as it was open!

(Beware: getting there does require a drive on a gravel road.)
