It was on a Sunday morning in May 1980 when an earthquake was credited for causing Mount St. Helens to violently erupt. The initial eruption continued for 9 hours and covered the surrounding areas with a gray ashy residue that will never be forgotten. Lives were instantly lost but eruptions continued for years to come. Although the volcano has been rather silent for many years now, it is expected that the silence will not last forever.

Social Media Description

Day 8 took us to Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument. We were a bit worried that the morning clouds would hang around all day, but we lucked out with clear skies. After learning about Mount St. Helens, driving along Spirit Lake Highway and exploring / hiking around the monument, we relaxed at a bear-themed VRBO cabin near Silver Lake for the evening.
