The Waikato River (which flows north from Lake Taupo) is the longest river in New Zealand. What starts as a peaceful and tranquil river gains momentum once the river waters pass through a narrow and shallow channel of volcanic rock. The result of the water flow is Huka Falls, which drops over 36 feet into a "pool" below.

The pouring down rain didn't stop us from seeing Huka Falls just a short distance from Taupo, New Zealand. Our first stop was at a roadside overlook where we got a pretty good view. We knew we could do better if we braved the rain and took a hike to the pedestrian bridge on top of the falls. From there, we spotted a viewpoint where we captured this photo of the falls.
