Walking Rome's Famous Ancient Road: Appian Way

One of the most famous ancient roads in Rome is commonly referred to as The Appian Way (or Via Appia Antica). Connecting the Roman Forum with today's Brindisi, the road was originally 350 miles long. Originally helping make trade easier between Italy and neighboring countries, walking along even a part of the road today is walking on a piece of history!

Do you enjoy going off the beaten path?

It's one of our favorite things to do when traveling. When our cruise ship stopped in Civitavecchia just outside of Rome in 2018, we joined a private tour that took us to the "secrets of Rome". Although most of the places that we stopped were not "secret", they were off the beaten path and most were new to us. We even had the chance to walk along The Appian Way, one of the most famous ancient roads in Rome.

What are some of your favorite off the beaten path destinations?
