Unless you're visiting in the off-season (early November to late March), hiking the open paths of the famous Blue Trail in Cinque Terre National Park requires the purchase of a Cinque Terre Trekking Card. A one-day card comes at a cost of 7.50 euros per adult (14.50 euros for 2 days). Cards can be purchased at train stations or at trail entry points like the one between Corniglia and Vernazza.

How much hiking is too much hiking?
I'm pretty sure that I reached the "too much" point during our three days in Cinque Terre. My legs were extremely sore for almost the entire following week ... until miraculously, they were back to normal!
The blue path is the most famous of the hiking trails in the national park, and I didn't want to leave without conquering at least one. (Only two were open during our stay, so we chose the shorter, and mostly downhill, trail which took us from Corniglia to Vernazza.) The views were amazing, and so were our lemon granitas near the half way point.
